The Harrisburg Area Go Club sponsored a February 19 "Winter Tournament" at the Lower Paxton Youth Center in Harrisburg. Tom Boone (11k) won, with five of seven games played. The tournament attracted nine players, ranging in strength from 15k to 1k, from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The self-paired format allowed players to play as many games as they could handle, and everyone got in at least five rated games.
Welcome to the new Harrisburg Area Go Club website. Now that we have a real website address, we will be taking a more active role in trying to attract new players. If you are a regular attendee, I will be giving you some fliers to be hung wherever you think would be a good place.
The Go Club has been going well. We have a good meeting location, and attendance has increased over the past few months (despite one of our more dedicated players having a conflict on meeting night). Some of the new participants are new players, and getting better.
Starting the week after Christmas we will be switching back to WEDNESDAY night meetings. This will let one of our more regular players be able to attend. So hoping to see you on Wednesdays in 2011!
We will continue to hold Wednesday night meetings over the Summer. The Borders location is working out very well. Everyone is enjoying the atmosphere, and it occassionally attracts passers-by. Pretty much the only downside is the 10pm curfew (when the store closes).
Starting in August or September we will need to switch back to Tuesday evenings, because Jason has a class on Wednesday nights. We will continue to use Borders as our meeting location.
The club organizer continues to have classes on Tuesday nights, so we planning to hold regular meetings on Wednesday nights starting in January.
Also, the location is changing. We are going to try meeting at Borders Bookstore Café, Camp Hill (3515 Gettysburg Rd). We're still open to suggestions about venues. If you have an idea of a good place to meet, let us know.
Please note that beginning in late August the club organizer has a graduate class on Tuesday nights, so he cannot hold our regular meetings until that class is finished (sometime late December).
The current plan is to resume regular meetings on Tuesdays in January. If you have any suggestions about venue, please let me know, since I'm not sure about the availability of Shepherdstown and besides that I'd like to find a spot that gets more passers-by traffic.
The Carlisle Go Club has graciously donated four (count them: four!) Go sets for the Mechanicsburg Club to use. Granted, these are paper boards, but they are full size and include full size stones. I am very excited for the club to have some of its own sets. We will no longer be limited to using my little 12-inch board.
I have also acquired a real 9x9 board (13x13 on the back). In combination with the stones from the Carlisle Club, we'll be able to play small games on a board made for small games.
This weekend, Jonathan Corbin and Jason Long attended the New Jersey Open Go Tournament in Princeton, NJ. Over 100 players turned out for the event.
